History

Tirurangadi holds a distinguished place in the national history of Kerala. Since 1836, this historic land has played a significant role in the Mappila uprisings that took place in the Eranad and Valluvanad taluks against the unjust policies of the British and the feudal landlords who acted as supporters of the colonial administration.

The roads, fort remains, and places of worship that date back to the periods of Tipu Sultan and the Zamorin continue to shed light on the region’s ancient heritage. Historic landmarks such as the Mamburam Makham and the Nadvil Juma-ath Palli are well known for their historical importance. The famous Thirukulam Shiva Temple, believed to be nearly a thousand years old, is situated within the limits of Tirurangadi Municipality.

Tirurangadi also served as a major center of the 1921 Malabar Rebellion. Many stories are associated with the origin of the town’s name. It is believed that the old name “Thiruvanangadi” gradually evolved into “Tirurangadi” over time.

The Tirurangadi Grama Panchayat Board was formed on June 1, 1962, by combining the villages of Tirurangadi and Thirukulam. From 1954 to 1958, members of the Panchayat Board were selected through a show-of-hands method. Kunjappan Nair was the first President of Thirukulam Panchayat, while K.T. Mohammed Haji served as the first President of the Tirurangadi Village Panchayat in 1954.

After the term of the Tirurangadi and Thirukulam Panchayats ended in 1958, the administration was taken over by a Special Officer. On December 20, 1963, K.P. Ahmedkutty Haji was elected as the President of the Tirurangadi Panchayat, which included the Thirukulam and Tirurangadi villages. The Board that assumed office on January 1, 1964, continued in power for more than fifteen years.

On October 30, 1995, the first meeting of the elected members under the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act was held under the chairmanship of M. Mohammed Kutty Munshi. On October 4, 1995, Smt. Ullat Rasiya became the President, and after the general elections held in 2000, Shri A.K. Abdurahim led the Panchayat as President. He was re-elected in the 2005 elections. In the 2010 elections, Shri V.P. Ahmedkutty became the President.

Subsequently, on November 1, 2015, the Government issued an order upgrading Tirurangadi Grama Panchayat into Tirurangadi Municipality.
