District Heritage Museum in Tirurangadi 

Malappuram District Heritage Museum, Chemmad is a major cultural and historical museum located at Hajoor Kachery in Tirurangadi, Malappuram district, Kerala. The museum is housed in a historic colonial-era building that once served as an important British administrative center in Malabar. Later, the building also became associated with the historic Malabar Rebellion (1921), making it an important heritage landmark of Kerala.

The museum was developed by the Kerala Department of Archaeology to preserve and showcase the rich history, culture, geography, and traditions of Malappuram district. It presents the story of Malappuram through modern galleries, historical exhibits, audio-visual presentations, traditional artifacts, and cultural displays. Visitors can explore sections related to prehistoric life, the Megalithic period, Chera history, colonial rule, the freedom struggle, and the Malabar Rebellion.

The museum also highlights the district’s unique cultural identity, including traditional art forms, musical traditions, jewelry, food culture, migration history, trade development, famous ancestral homes, and local ecological features like Nilambur teak and Western Ghats biodiversity. The preserved prison cells and British-era structures inside the compound provide visitors with a direct connection to the region’s colonial past.

Located in Tirurangadi, a town known for its historical role in Kerala’s freedom movement, the museum has become an important educational and tourism destination in Malappuram district
